Utah Academic Decathlon
Fact Sheet
Competition:
The Utah Academic Decathlon consists of six tests of academic strength, three demonstrations of communication ability, and one Super Quiz. These tests are all based on a national topic selected for the year. This year’s topic is The European Renaissance.
Testing Areas:
School Participation:
Schools have the opportunity to compete in a local and regional UAD competition. If selected, the team attends the state competition in March. The state championship team is then invited to compete at the national level in April. Each team needs a coach and in some cases two coaches are recommended. There is an entry fee for state competition of $300, and each team is responsible to provide its own housing, travel, and food expenses.
Team Format:
A team consists of nine full-time students from the ninth through twelfth grades. Each student will compete in all ten tests. Each team is made up of three Honor students, three Scholastic students, and three Varsity students. Only six scores count for the final team standings in the competition, or the top two scores in each of the three categories. Schools may enter with fewer than nine members and still be eligible for team awards as long as there are at least two members in each category. No more than nine members may come to the state competition; alternates do not compete unless they are replacing one of the original nine-team members.
Student Selection:
Only certain classes (course work) can be used in the GPA computation. Please refer to the computation of Grade Point Averages on the following pages for eligibility.
Student Categories:
§ 3 Honor Students 3.75--4.00 GPA
§ 3 Scholastic Students 3.00--3.74 GPA
§ 3 Varsity Student 0.00--2.99 GPA
